BATTERY PARK CITY — Asphalt Green's new $55 million community center in Battery Park City is finally taking shape, new photos show.

The long-delayed center, which will not open for at least another couple of months, is getting closer to completion — with the pools, dance studios and a basketball court all clearly recognizable.

"It will open this spring," said Gayle Horwitz, president of the Battery Park City Authority, which is building the center. "It's pretty much near complete."

The 52,000-square-foot facility at 212 N. End Ave. was originally scheduled to open in November 2011 and has been delayed several times.

Horwitz is still uncertain about a completion date; Asphalt Green does not plan to start running programs until mid-April.

The construction and permitting process has gone more slowly than the Battery Park City Authority expected, causing the delays, Horwitz said.

"It's an incredibly frustrating situation," Horwitz said at a Community Board 1 meeting Tuesday. "If we could open it tomorrow, I'd be the happiest person alive."
