EAST VILLAGE — A fire broke out on the 11th floor of a building in the Jacob Riis II Houses Monday afternoon, fire officials said.

Nearly 80 firefighters responded to the call at 749 FDR Drive, at the corner of East Sixth Street, at 4:07 p.m. Monday, an FDNY spokesman said.

The firefighters brought the blaze under control by 4:40 p.m., the FDNY said.

One person who was in the affected apartment was able to evacuate and was not seriously injured, the FDNY said.

The cause of the fire was not immediately clear.

The Jacob Riis II public housing complex, named for the famed journalist and reformer from the turn of the 20th century, consists of six buildings with 577 apartments and is home to more than 1,400 people, according to the city.
