EAST VILLAGE — Police are zeroing in on a suspect in the shooting death of an Alphabet City teen over the weekend.

Donovan Salgado, 18, who went by his middle name Keith, was struck by gunfire just before 2 a.m. Sunday at the Campos Plaza housing complex on East 12th Street near Avenue C, the NYPD said.

The teenager, who lived a few blocks away on East Ninth Street, was taken to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition and died later from his injuries, police said.

Police sources said they are currently trying to locate the suspected shooter, who they don’t believe fled the city. No details were available regarding the suspect's description due to the ongoing investigation, police noted.

Sources could not confirm that that shooting was related to any gang activity in the area, but did acknowledge that Salgado was known to law enforcement. Sources added that there is a certain amount of gang activity near Campos Plaza, resulting in violent flare-ups on occasion.

Hundreds of Salgado’s family and friends gathered outside his apartment between Avenues B and C Tuesday night for a vigil in his honor.

Friends and neighbors previously said they thought he had gotten mixed up with the "wrong crowd."

“He was a good kid stuck in the wrong crowd,” said Salgado’s former girlfriend, Amber Turner, 17, of the Lower East Side. “Everything just turned around.”
