MANHATTAN — A fire broke out on the 35th floor of the upscale Warwick New York Hotel on Monday evening, FDNY officials said.
There were no injuries or evacuations, but 78 firefighters were still on the scene at 65 West 54th St. around 6:30 p.m. after responding to a call that came in around 5:15 p.m., fire officials said.
"We had the fire department investigating some smoke," said a man answering the phone at the Warwick, who declined to give his name.
"For now we're advising our guests not to use the elevators while the fire department investigates," the hotel worker said.
The building was commissioned by newspaper publisher William Randolph Hearst in 1926 for his lover, Marion Davies, to host their Hollywood and theater friends, the hotel's website said.
That's why it was built across the street from the Ziegfeld Theater, which was razed in 1966 and later reopened down the block on West 54th Street, between Sixth and Seventh avenues.
