Occupy Wall Street Gets Surprise Treat from Creators of Ben & Jerry's

MANHATTAN — You scream, I scream, and apparently even protesters scream for ice cream.

Occupy Wall Street demonstrators lapped up free frozen treats Friday afternoon when the hippie ice cream impresarios who founded Ben & Jerry’s surprised activists at Zuccotti Park.

Dozens gathered in the plaza, near the World Trade Center, as they waited to be served up some frosty goodness by Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield.

“When Ben and Jerry support a cause, you know you should, too,” tweeted Ankit Aggarwal.

Despite the excitement, some voiced skepticism over the duo’s visit, criticizing them for selling off their company — which skyrocketed in popularity since its creation in Vermont in 1978 — to British-Dutch world food distributor Unilever.

“Ben and Jerry support #OWS? So that means Unilever supports #OWS? Why do I find that hard to believe?” tweeted Julie Grahame.

Unilever and Ben & Jerry's did not immediately respond for comment.

Ben & Jerry's became the first large company to come out in support of the protests this week when it published a message of encouragement on its website on Tuesday reading, "To those who Occupy: We stand with you."
