SOHO — A fire at in SoHo early Friday sent 11 people to the hospital, including seven firefighters, an FDNY spokesman said.

The blaze at 68 Thompson St. was reported shortly before 2 a.m., and left at least one civilian and five firefighters with minor injuries. Two firefighters sustained more serious injuries like heat exhaustion, according to the FDNY.

Another three people were hurt, but the extent of their injuries was not immediately available on Friday.

The blaze began in the building's basement, an FDNY spokesman said. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Shea Huebner, a resident of the building for 25 years, said she was awake in her second-floor apartment when the fire broke out. She said she first knew there was a problem when the power went off. But she said the smoke detectors in the building, which has about 40 apartments, did not go off, she said.

"It was very heavy smoke and that burning smell," Huebner said.

She grabbed her husband, her 11-year-old son and her purse, but had to leave the family's cat, who is not yet a year old, behind. They haven't spotted her yet.

The fire affected Thompson Cafe, in the ground floor of the building, which had been closed for renovations, as well as Grand Soho Nails Too.

The American Red Cross in Greater New York has provided temporary housing for 15 adults, a child and a dog, a spokesperson said.

Huebner said Friday morning that she was not sure where her family would spend the night.
