MANHATTAN — The Municipal Art Society has received a $600,000 challenge grant from Wall Street investor and longtime donor Robert W. Wilson, according to the venerable urban planning and preservationist institution.

Over the next three years, Wilson said he will give $2 for every $1 spent in donations of $1,000 or more, up to a total amount of $600,000.

“I hope that this challenge will inspire current and new MAS supporters to contribute to an organization that provides an independent voice on development and planning in New York City,” Wilson said in a statement.

The non-profit organization will launch a campaign next month to solicit larger donations so it can tap into the full potential of the grant.

“Unrestricted support is the lifeline of any non-profit organization, and for MAS, it’s fundamental to our core advocacy, planning and public program activities,” said MAS President Vin Cipolla. “Bob Wilson’s generous challenge grant will be enormously helpful to our work.”
