MANHATTAN — A man barricaded himself in his Flatiron apartment for about three hours after menacing contractors there with a gun, sources said.

Police are investigating reports that the man waved a firearm at the workers at 12 E. 22nd St. around 12:45 p.m. He retreated into his apartment there and stopped communicating with investigators, sources said.

A police source said that the suspect had gotten into a fight with window washers who were on scaffolding outside the building.

The workers then called 911, the source said. When cops arrived, the man would not let them in, according to the source.

But police said the man eventually surrendered and was taken into custody at about 3:45 p.m.

Workers at Polaris Finest Nail & Spa, nearby, said that they were not allowed to leave the store for about two hours.

"We didn't know what was going on," said one. "We thought something happened. We thought someone got hurt."

There were no immediate reports of hostages being held.

There were no injuries.
