SOHO — If you build it and stick a glowing apple on it, they will come.
As Apple plans its biggest store yet — a 23,000 square foot outlet in Grand Central Terminal — the tech giants are shaking up their downtown operation.
The company will set up shop at 72 Greene St. while it's main SoHo store at 103 Prince St. is renovated and expanded, tech blog AppleInsider reported.
The temporarily location, which will displace the boutique King of Greene Street, will cost Apple $1.4 million to build, according to Buildings Department records.
It's expected to occupy the space's first floor and a portion of the second floor, according to another blog devoted to Apple, ifoAppleStore.com.
Apple's main SoHo store is expanding into a neighboring former post office, SoHo Alliance president Sean Sweeney confirmed in March. The expansion will increase the store's square footage by approximately 5,000 square feet.
Building permits describe the work on Prince Street as "change of use at second floor and portion of cellar and first floor to retail store and accessory offices."
Apple's move back into its bigger and better store is expected to occur in the next few months, but no timetable has been provided, according to AppleInsider.
72 Greene St., a huge French Renaissance building with an eye-catching cast iron facade, was built in 1873 and was known as "the King of Greene Street," according to NYC-Architecture.com.
