MANHATTAN - The historic Rainbow Room at Rockefeller Center, which has been shuttered for two years, is getting a makeover, according to a published report.
Building permits have been issued for demolition and construction work at the legendary nightclub on the 65th floor of 30 Rockefeller Center, which closed in 2009 after the last owners, the Ciprianis, failed to pay the rent, the New York Post said.
Also being repaired is the kitchen on the 64th floor of the building, the paper said.
It's not clear what will become of the famed space, but a landmark request is pending. The exterior of the building is already landmarked.
The landlord, Tishman Speyer, said that it "continues to review options for reopening the iconic Rainbow Room as a world-class dining establishment for the enjoyment of New Yorkers and visitors from around the world," the paper said.
