MANHATTAN — The landmark Greenwich Village diner Waverly Restaurant gave locals a scare this week when it completely gutted its interior, suggesting it might be curtains for the decades-old eatery, according to Eater.
But this gem of old New York will not be closing its doors for long.
A description on the contractor's website revealed that the greasy-spoon classic, located on the corner of Waverly Place and Sixth Avenue, is simply undergoing renovations — for the first time in its 30 year history.
And not only will the Waverly be returning, it will also expand into a neighboring space, according to the website.
"The interiors will be fully renovated keeping the original atmosphere, [while] modernizing and enlarging the space," the contractor assured.
The restaurant's owners were not immediately reachable for comment on the decision to renovate.
