MANHATTAN — Rep. Anthony Weiner's sexting scandal was taken to a new cringeworthy level after news emerged that his wife is pregnant with the couple's first child.

The New York Times said Huma Abedin, who works for Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, is two weeks short of her first trimester, according to what the couple has disclosed to friends and family.

The news come at an awkward time as Weiner is facing increasing calls for resignation from fellow Democrats in the wake of the sexting scandal.

"I was hoping it wasn’t true," a woman who worked with Abedin during Clinton’s failed 2008 presidential campaign told the Daily News. "It's always easier to walk away when the children aren't an issue."

Weiner, 46, has admitted to sending lewd photos and having sexually explicit online conversations with six women over the last few years.

At the news conference earlier this week when he confessed to the sexting scandal,  Weiner insisted that he and Abedin "will weather this."

"I love her very much, and she loves me,” he said during his emotional news conference.

Abedin so far has remained silent about the topic.
