MANHATTAN — House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.) said Thursday that embattled congressman Anthony Weiner should "come clean" and offer a clear explanation about the lewd Twitter pic sent from his account, Politico reported.
Weiner said Wednesday he wasn’t sure if the lewd photo sent from his account to a young woman was of him or not, the Daily News reported.
"I can't say with certitude. My system was hacked. Pictures can be manipulated," he said.
Weiner reportedly hired a private law firm, Baker & Hostetler, to investigate how his Twitter account could have hacked.
"We're treating it as a prank, not treating it as a national security invasion or anything," Weiner told the News.
The photo was sent last Friday to a Seattle grad student, Cordova Gennette, who follows the congressman on Twitter.
Weiner at first tried to brush off the incident saying it was a distraction, but later admitted he couldn’t say with certainty whether the photo was of him or not.
The congressman is a leading contender to run for New York City mayor after Bloomberg’s term is over.
It is still uncertain how this scandal will affect his campaign.
Matt Damon is hosting a fundraiser for Weiner on June 20th on East 22nd Street.
