South Tower Waterfall Tested at 9/11 Memorial

LOWER MANHATTAN — The roar of an enormous waterfall filled the World Trade Center site Friday morning, as the Port Authority tested the fountains in the South Tower footprint for the first time.

The test went well, a Port Authority spokesman said, and pictures show thousands of gallons of water gushing into the reflecting pool as construction workers gathered around to watch.

The Port Authority first tested the North Tower pool last November but had not turned on water to South Tower pool until this week.

When the pools are complete, they will hold 480,000 gallons of water apiece, flowing down at a rate of 3,000 gallons per minute.

The 9/11 memorial, including a tree-covered plaza and the two reflecting pools surrounded by parapets inscribed with the victims' names, is scheduled to open this fall on the 10th anniversary of the attacks.
