MANHATTAN — The city's crackdown on bicyclists has claimed another victim — the legendary comedian and bike enthusiast Robin Williams, according to an interview the actor gave to "The View" on Tuesday.
Williams, who is living on the Upper West Side while he stars in the Broadway play "Bengal Tiger at the Baghdad Zoo," told the show's hosts that he was recently pulled over by police for riding his bike on the sidewalk.
"No one else was on the sidewalk…all of a sudden [I hear] 'bloop bloop, pull over!'" Williams recalled, imitating the sound of police sirens.
"I went, I'm on a bike — wow!" the actor continued, noting his surprise at being pulled over on a bicycle.
Williams said the cops didn't recognize him at first because he was wearing a balaclava, but when he pulled it down the officers decided to let him off with a warning, the Oscar-winning actor said.
The "Good Will Hunting" star's run-in with the law came during an ongoing political battle over the city's bicycling policies – with cyclists and drivers facing off over bike lanes and police taking heat for ticketing bike riders in Central Park.
