MANHATTAN — Stanford University President John Hennessy talked up plans last week for a proposed new campus on Roosevelt Island.
"New York is the cultural capital of the United States," Hennessy told the school's Academic Council on April 14. "It is also the media capital. It's the place where the new, new thing happens in a very different dimension than it happens in the Bay Area."
The Roosevelt Island campus would take up 10 acres and include residential towers and academic buildings, according to the school. There would also be cafes, a gym and an auditorium.
Under the plan, Stanford would build a campus for applied science research and engineering. If approved, construction would begin in 2013 and they would enroll 440 master’s and PhD students by 2015, according to the university.
The school reportedly described Roosevelt Island as a "unique place" with housing, hospitals and recreation.
"Whether there will be another hub of innovation in the world is not in doubt. The only question is where it will evolve," Stanford wrote in their proposal.
"Silicon Valley is unique, and replicating its success will be a challenge. But we believe it can be done. Stanford University has the expertise and the track record, and New York City is the place to apply them."
