GREENWICH VILLAGE — James Franco may have gotten dismal reviews for his Oscar hosting duties, but an online video based on his shout out to his alma mater NYU has become an online hit.

After Luke Matheny's short film "God of Love" won the Oscar for Best Live Action Short Film, a film he created as his Masters' thesis at NYU, Franco took the stage and showed Matheny and the school some love.

"NYU, what's up!" Franco said as he pointed to Matheny.

Franco's shout-out to Matheny quickly became a gif, a short graphic animation, which popped up online on NYU Local, a student blog.

Franco attended NYU and Columbia for graduate degrees before heading to Yale for a doctorate in literature.
