EAST HARLEM — Ice Cream trucks are familiar enough in East Harlem, but a new program from Manhattan Borough President Scott Stringer will put a Veggie Truck on the neighborhood's roads.
Stringer is expected to announce the Veggie Truck, which will travel to East Harlem senior centers and housing projects to start, at his State of the Borough address Tuesday, the New York Daily News reported.
Residents will be able to use debit cards and food stamps at the Veggie Truck, which will sell produce purchased wholesale from the Bronx, the News reported.
Stringer told the paper that he eventually wants to expand the truck to Washington Heights and Inwood, which, along with East Harlem, are classified as food deserts where residents have limited access to fresh fruits and vegetables.
