Flurries on Friday Could Make January Snowiest Month Ever

MANHATTAN — Residents should hang on to their snow boots as more flakes expected on Friday and Saturday could push January into the record books as the snowiest month ever on record.

This month already has the dubious distinction of being the snowiest January — with 36 inches recorded thus far — and it's just 0.9 inches shy of the record currently held by February 2010.

To be sure, the forecast called for just a dusting — just an inch or two — from the snow showers that will linger through Saturday, according to AccuWeather.

But that was little consolation for New Yorkers who are sick of the white stuff.

The mid-week snowstorm that dumped 19 inches of snow on Manhattan, left in its wake snow-covered streets and slippery sidewalks that made it difficult for some to get around.

The winter spanning 1995 and 1996 still holds the No. 1 rank — but the current season is closing fast.

"It would be nice to say I'm going to get out my skis, but at this age I'm just happy to get around," said Greenwich Village painter Herbert Sebeck, 77, adding that the city's dirt made the snow even less appealing.

Aside from the chance of light snow, the weekend's highs were expected to be in the low 30s, according to AccuWeather.
