MANHATTAN — Falling ice hit a man in the head in Times Square Tuesday afternoon, sending him to the hospital, fire officials and witnesses said.
His condition wasn't immediately clear. He was bleeding from the forehead when firefighters responded, fire officials said.
The pedestrian plaza between West 45th and West 46th streets was closed of to pedestrians.
While it wasn't immediately clear where the ice fell from, witnesses said it seemed to fly from the Mariott Marquis Hotel at Broadway and West 45th Street.
A spokeswoman for the Mariott Marquis said a hotel engineering team and the NYPD were looking at different setbacks on the hotel to determine where the ice was coming from.
With New Year's Eve days away, some tourists in Times Square were worried about their safety.
"Oh, my goodness, that's scary," said Barbra Shekore of Columbia, MD. "With New Year's coming, they're going to have to figure out what they're going to do about this paricular spot."
Safras Charles, 29, from London, was shocked.
"That should not happen," he said. "New York is one of the biggest cities in the world, they should be prepared for things like this."
Firefighters got the call at 3:03 p.m., and arrived on the scene 20 minutes later, fire officials said, and the man was taken to St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital.
Roughly an hour later, more ice was seen falling nearby.
