Rubber Boots Become Fashionable on SoHo's Slushy Streets

SOHO — From $20 Tretorns to $1,200 Monclers, pedestrians in SoHo traversed the mess of brown slush, snow banks and unshoveled sidewalks in a wide array of winter boot fashion on Tuesday.

The most popular boots were the Hunter Wellingtons — knee-high rubber shoes that look like something your grandpa would wear while fly-fishing ankle-deep in a river.

"They're super dry," said Elaine Trevorrow, 26, of the East Village, "but your toes get cold."

On the high end, Cat Razmilovic, 23, of London, donned a pair of $1,200 Monclers, which she said kept her both dry and warm. A man who declined to give his name said he had a closet full of expensive Prada boots and Northface gear but, when the streets were this messy, his $20 army-green Tretorns were best.

Sorel Caribous were also a hot item, and seemed to be the best for both fashion and function.

Joshua Griffler, 30, a photographer who lives in Nolita, said his fashion friends love his $180 Sorel boots with faux-fur lining peeking out of the tops, but his jock friends — not so much.

"They hate them," said Griffler, a die-hard Jets fan. "But when the weather is like this, and my friend who's been making fun of my boots is in a pair of old Chuck Taylors, I win."
