WASHINGTON HEIGHTS — The parents of Tyler Clementi, the Rutgers student who committed suicide by jumping from the George Washington Bridge after learning a roommate had broadcast online his sexual encounter with a man, reportedly plan to sue the school.

Stephen DeFreo, an attorney for Clementi’s parents, filed notice on Friday stating the suit would allege Rutgers's administration failed to properly enforce student safety policies that could have prevented the situation that allegedly pushed the freshman to suicide, reported the Home New Tribune.

A Rutgers spokesman said the university sympathized with the family for its loss, but emphasized the school administration was not responsible for Clementi's death, according to the Tribune.

The students allegedly involved in the broadcasting of Clementi’s sexual act, his roommate Dharun Ravi and freshman Molly Wei, were charged with invasion of privacy and are awaiting trial.

Both students have officially withdrawn from their studies at the university.

Clementi’s death shook up the Upper Manhattan community after his body was found floating in the Harlem River at the edge of Inwood Hill Park.

His suicide prompted memorial services on the George Washington Bridge, in memory of Clementi, and in support of individuals who have been bullied.

After his suicide it was made public that the Port Authority is investigating new suicide prevention methods on the bridge, which may include cement barriers or new fencing.
