MANHATTAN — Police are hunting for a man who sexually assaulted a 21-year-old woman in Hamilton Heights on Thursday afternoon.

The suspect followed the City College student into her apartment building on 147th Street between Amsterdam and Broadway at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, police told NY1.

The suspect allegedly threatened the woman with a gun and forced his way into her apartment, where he sexually assaulted and robbed her, police said.

NYPD released surveillance video showing the man using the victim's ATM card in a convenience store.

Residents in the area were alarmed by the afternoon attack.

"I've never really thought of it as an unsafe place," an unnamed female resident told NY1. "Obviously I've gone out at times when maybe people wouldn't consider it safe. So definitely hearing something like this happening, and especially because it is in broad daylight, is something that's little concerning."

Anyone with information about the suspect is asked to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 800-577-TIPS.

Tips can also be submitted by logging onto the Crime Stoppers website or texting their tips to 274637(CRIMES) then enter TIP577.
