CITY HALL — Mayor Michael Bloomberg's daughter is receiving an MRI after being seriously hurt in a horse riding accident.
Georgina Bloomberg, 27, suffered a concussion and "may or may not have cracked some vertebrates" when she fell from her horse, Radio City, during a show jumping event in Syracuse on Friday, the mayor told reporters at a press conference at City Hall Monday.
"She’s right now getting an MRI at one of the hospitals," he said. Doctors are also tracking down old x-rays to try to determine whether cracks in some of her vertebrae were caused by this accident or the last time she broke her back.
Nonetheless, the mayor seemed optimistic about his daughter's outcome.
"It's certainly not life-threatening. She’ll be fine," he said.
"She swore to me — or her mother did — that they would call when they got out. For all I know they’re having lunch some place," he said.
He said that when he talked to her yesterday, Georgina was "in a little bit of pain, but she was still walking around."
His daughters' mother, ex-wife Susan Brown, "is also bearing up reasonably well, more importantly," the mayor joked.
Georgina, who is a well-respected horse jumper, has previously suffered a broken back, collarbone, leg and foot in riding accidents, the mayor said.
He recalled his daughter once comparing her battle scars with a 300-pound football player.
"She had more than he had," he laughed.
He also said he's always worried about his daughter getting hurt.
"It’s a dangerous sport. The horse weighs 2,000 pounds. George weighs 100. That’s a pretty big mismatch," he said.
Georgina was dressed as a witch at the Halloween-themed Syracuse event. She lost consciousness on the floor of the arena for a short period of time, but managed to get up and walk out of the rink, the mayor said.
The News reported the rider's saddle came lose and caused her to slide off her mount as it jumped.
Bloomberg also took a moment Monday morning to thank all of those who have sent letters, called and tweeted get-well messages to the family.
"Thanks everyone for your thoughts and prayers for my daughter Georgina," the mayor tweeted Monday afternoon.
