MANHATTAN — Test scores may be down, but bedbug sightings are skyrocketing in the New York City public school system, the New York Daily News reported.

The number of confirmed bedbug cases within the school system has more than doubled compared to the same period last year, jumping from 135 to 336 for the first two months of school, according to the paper.

The city's Department of Education cautioned the paper that these numbers do not reflect full on infestations and may refer to the sighting of just one bug.

Still, the number of confirmed cases is on pace to double for the third year in a row. There were 426 reports of the creepy crawlers during the 2008-2009 school year and 1,019 during 2009-2010, according to the News.

While the DOE has refused to provide a full list of schools where the incidents occurred, it did note that P.S. 30, P.S. 38 and P.S. 175 in Harlem and Ross Global Academy Charter School in the East Village had all been affected, the paper said.

Under a state law passed last year, schools are required to inform parents when bedbugs are discovered within the school.
