"Come early, come often. I have a lot of hits ... no two shows will be the same," Prince said.

Prince said he plans to perform with the New Power Generation, alongside Maceo Parker, Janelle Monae, Minneapolis bands Mint Condition and Graham Central Station, Esperanza Spalding, Cassandra Wilson, Sheila E and others to be announced.

The last time the artist appeared on stage in New York was at the "Celebrate Brooklyn" concert in Park Slope in 2006, where he stunned concertgoers with a surprise performance.

Prince told people at the Apollo Theater that audiences should come prepared.

"Bring your friends, bring your children and bring foot spray, because it's going to be funky," he said. "Welcome to America. Peace."
