MANHATTAN — Pollution may discourage many New Yorkers from swimming, running or biking — but it turns out for triathletes Manhattan is a better training ground than most.

USA Triathlon (USAT) selected Chelsea Piers on Wednesday as a certified training center, an honor given to only five facilities nationally. The waterfront facility is the only training center to receive that designation in the Northeast.

In order to receive this designation, Chelsea Piers had to meet a series of standards including providing access to at least two USAT-certified coaches, bike fitting and discounted services for USAT members and coaches.

Chelsea Pier amenities relevant to budding triathletes include a six-lane, 25-yard indoor swimming pool, a private cycling studio and a quarter mile indoor running track.
