MANHATTAN — Canal Street traffic may get even worse.
Access to the Holland Tunnel from Hudson Street will be closed for the next five years as the city begins water pipe repairs starting this Sunday, The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday.
The work will also narrow Hudson Street from four lanes to two, affecting the commute of 48,000 vehicles daily according to The Journal.
Drivers trying to get into the tunnel will either have to go up West Street and then take a right on Canal or go down Varick Street.
The tunnel serviced 16,609,000 eastbound vehicles in 2009, according to the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.
The work is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
