MANHATTAN — A mugger stabbed a 26-year-old woman in the side during a robbery on an Upper West Side subway platform on Sunday, police said.

The unidentified waitress was returning home to Washington Heights from restaurant job in Midtown when the man grabbed her purse at the 96th Street and Broadway subway station at 2:30 a.m., according to police.

The woman spotted the man on the subway car near Columbus Circle and he followed when she got off to transfer at the 96th Street station, the Daily News reported.

"He kinda just circled me and showed me his knife. He grabbed my purse and I tried to grab it back. I wanted my purse. I had money, everything in there. I was scared, I wasn't really thinking," the woman told the News.

Police said he stabbed her in the left torso when she struggled to keep hold of her bag.

She said there were about 20 people "just staring" at her after it happened, the paper reported.

"I said, 'I just got stabbed! Call 911! Does anyone know what I should do?' They just stared at me," the woman told the News.

She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital, where she was in stable condition, police said.

Police are reviewing surveillance video from the subway platform for footage of the mugger. The suspect is described as a thin, 6-foot tall black man with short hair. No arrests have been made.
