MANHATTAN — Federal agents traveled to Georgia to find how a gun bought there ended up in a Harlem shootout, the New York Post reported.

Two shots from the .38 caliber revolver reportedly sparked a volley of 46 shots from police that left Luis Soto, 22, dead and 6 people injured.

"We want to know how this gun got on to the streets of New York," a source from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives told the Post.

Two members of the Joint Firearms Taskforce and the ATF flew to Columbus, Ga., to interview a man who bought the Smith and Wesson and two other handguns in 2007.

Witnesses said Angel Alvarez, 23, and Soto got locked in a fistfight at a Harlem block party and started fighting over the gun, which allegedly belonged to Soto.

Police said Alvarez shot twice at police, who returned fire, killing Soto, and hitting Alvarez between 21 and 23 times, according to news reports. Three bystanders and two police officers were also hit.
