HARLEM — Will you still love me, when I'm 80?
For troubled Harlem politician Charles Rangel, the answer seem to be no.
The disgraced representative's old friends are sending their regrets so fast that he's having to use automated phone messages to try to boost turnout for his birthday party next week, the New York Post reported.
Rangel, who was charged with ethics violations in July, is sending recorded messages saying, "It's going to be a terrific party, and we want you there.
"Please try to make it. I'll be looking to meet you."
Rangel’s birthday party, usually a lavish affair, has put many of his old friends in a tough spot.
It's left many with the choice of standing with a man who was a mentor for many, or distancing themselves from someone who has become a big problem for the Democratic party.
Most area politicians still refuse to say if they will attend or not.
Rangel’s staff also had to find new entertainment after Aretha Franklin fell and was forced to cancel her appearance. Dionne Warwick will reportedly be filling in for the diva.
