MANHATTAN — Twenty firehouses were spared the axe Thursday night as the City Council finally came to an agreement on the 2011 budget.

City officials, residents, FDNY and have spent the past several months protesting Mayor Michael Bloomberg's January proposal to shut down 20 firehouses.

"We all have to tighten our belts, but closing twenty firehouses simply goes too far," Public Advocate Bill de Blasio said in a statement earlier this year.

City Council Member Elizabeth Crowley, chair of the Fire and Criminal Justice committee, sent out a statement Thursday night saying that the firehouses had been saved.

"Our top priority is to keep New Yorkers safe and by finding the money to save firehouses, we succeeded today," Crowley said. "The City has negotiated a budget that will restore the $37 million to keep our fire companies open."

Mayor Michael Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn will announce their 2011 fiscal year budget agreement at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

The budget is scheduled for an official vote on Monday, June 28.
