MANHATTAN — A Subway franchise may soon replace the Mandarin Oriental as the restaurant with the best view of Manhattan.
The chain's newest location opened Wednesday, perched between the beams of the 1 World Trade Center construction site, the New York Times reported.
Currently resting 27 floors above ground zero, the Subway will rise with the tower, which is planned to pierce the Manhattan skyline at 105 stories, the paper said.
While some construction workers still bring their lunch, many buy it from vendors on the ground, requiring them to be hoisted down in an expedition that can take more than an hour to complete, the Times noted.
The Subway, which may one day feature burgers, pizza and hot dogs, is an attempt to save time and increase productivity, according to the paper.
It cost $3 million to construct, along with two other "pods," which house offices and bathrooms for the vaulted workers, the Times said.
Other Subways have been built in slightly less zany locations, including a church in Buffalo, a riverboat in Germany and an aluminum smelting plant in New Zealand, the paper noted.
