MANHATTAN — The High Line is about to be expanded to 30th Street, and will include a "Woodland Flyover" that will take visitors 15-feet above the old rail line into a stand of magnolia trees.
The City Planning Commission green lighted the plans last week, exactly a year after the sky park was opened.
Two million visitors have walked the elevated railway line from Gainsvoort Street in the Meatpacking District to 20th Street in Chelsea. The plans bring the park a step closer to saving the entire abandoned rail trestle, which winds its way up to 34th Street.
"The walkway leaves the High Line itself, you'll be walking through the canopy of trees," said Peter Mullan, the park's vice president of planning and design, the New York Post reported.
"The High Line gives you a vantage point on the hidden New York that you don't otherwise get to see."
The new section is planned for next year.
