MANHATTAN — Harlem Rep. Charlie Rangel mailed out fliers to his constituents offering them income tax advice just weeks after stepping down from his role as chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee because of ongoing ethics inquiries into — among other things — his questionable tax practices, the Daily News reported.
In the flier, which tells its recipients that the document was prepared and sent using taxpayer dollars, Rangel offers tips on how to get the most money back when filing income taxes in the coming weeks, the News reported.
"Hopefully, the information in this guide can help put money back into your pockets," Rangel said in the glossy, color pamphlet, according to the paper.
But Rangel's constituents didn't seem to want the congressman's advice on this particular issue.
"It's too much of a reminder to his constituents as to what he did. He shouldn't talk about taxes at all," 85-year-old Ed Handt told the News.
Rangel was admonished by the House Ethics committee in February for violating gift rules when he took corporate-sponsored junkets to the Caribbean.
The committee is reportedly still looking into more serious accusations against Rangel, including improper fundraising and failure to pay taxes on $75,000 in income that he made from renting out his Dominican Republic vacation home.
