WORLD TRADE CENTER — Emergency personnel rushed to Ground Zero Monday after a worker fell 20 feet into a hole and injured himself, officials said.

The FDNY received a call at 1:36 p.m. saying a worker had fallen in a hole at the Freedom Tower construction site, an FDNY official said. The worker fell 20 feet from the fourth or fifth floor of the tower, a firefighter on the scene said.

But when firefighters arrived outside the construction pit, the Port Authority prevented them from accessing the site, said FDNY spokesman Frank Dwyer.

Instead, Port Authority workers handed the injured man over to firefighters and EMS outside the construction scene, the FDNY said.
