The snow piling up on the ground was wreaking havoc on airport travel in and out of the city Friday with thousands of people left stranded at terminals.

JFK Airport was reporting up to five hour delays, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

A few terminals at the airport, such as Jet Blue, were operating as normal without delays and speedy security, passengers said.

Newark Liberty International Airport had massive delays and cancellations to northeastern destinations including Chicago and North Carolina.

LaGuardia Airport continued to have delays of up to two hours, according to the Port Authority. Southwest Airlines cancelled all flights to and from LaGuardia, USA Today reported.

Jet-setters were advised to call their airlines to check on flight schedules and cancellations.

Continental Airlines removed 270 flights from its regional carrier itinerary. U.S. Airways cancelled 356 flights in the New York area and American Airlines also cancelled a third of flights scheduled in and around the city.

Travelers scrambled to rearrange plans.

"I was headed to Mexico for vacation this morning, or so I thought!" wrote Meg Robertson on Twitter. "Flights cancelled and chaos at Newark airport."

Newark cancelled flights to North Carolina and other north-eastern destinations. Several flights were re-routed between JFK and Newark, prompting passengers to grumble about having to get to another airport.

Runway conditions were to blame for many of the delays at airports.

Authorities closed Westchester County Airport until crews could clear runways covered in snow.

The Port Authority posted staffers on 12 hour shifts around the clock in order to clear snow and roads around the airports.
