MIDTOWN – Despite the warnings of a blizzard coming to Manhattan, for many Midtown commuters the snowstorm was almost a blessing in disguise.

“I was worried about getting in this morning,” said James Kraft, who works in finance in Midtown East. “But my deli guy was there, the Times was on my doorstep, and the trains were running fine. It took no longer than usual.”

For others, though, the number of people who stayed home to weather the storm lead to an unusual availability of seats on the subway.

“I was shocked to see how few people were on the subway,” said researcher Jill Sollen. “Aside from having to walk through the snow to and from the train, my commute was basically the same as any other day, but for once I could get a seat on the 6 train.”

While many riders were pleased with the city’s response to the early stages of the storm, some riders who came into Manhattan from outer boroughs experienced issues.

“I came into the city from Brooklyn on the JMZ, which is above ground. I had to wait for 15 minutes in the snow while a train just sat on the tracks and we couldn’t get on. It was such a tease,” said Elan Gordon, who works in real estate finance.

“The worst thing was that they hadn’t shoveled the sidewalks at the subway,” said Brad Seeman, who commutes from Queens to his job in Midtown West. “But it could’ve been a lot worse.”

For those commuting from within Manhattan, the most trying part of their morning journey seemed to be the snow itself.

“It was cold and slushy,” said Jason Summers, who works at hedge fund administration company in Midtown West.

“It was like that movie 'White Out.'”
