BATTERY PARK CITY — For kids who want to go sledding near Battery Park City, the challenge is to find something with a slope.

Normally the Rector Street bridge just helps families cross over dangerous West Street. But one family took advantage of the blizzard to use it as a makeshift sledding hill.

“It wasn’t the intended use but it is doing the job and we are having fun,” said Dan Fandrich, who took his two boys, Theo, 12, and Alan, 7, to the "hill."

The boys were disappointed Wednesday morning when they didn't see much snow on the ground, Fandrich said. But by the afternoon, they were making snowmen and sledding.

“I’m happy we didn’t have to go to school today,” said Theo.

A blue plastic saucer couldn't keep up with the snow day fun, however. After a while of sledding, it had been torn to shreds, but those pieces were turned into a smaller sled and some improvised skis.

“It didn’t quite hold up like we had hoped,” Fandrich said.

Alan summed the day up simply: "I'm having fun."
