LITTLE ITALY — Manhattan's oldest Catholic school, St. Patrick's Old Cathedral School, will be closing its doors for the last time in June, according to church officials.

The 188 year-old school has taught generations of students, but has had difficulty keeping enrollment numbers high over the last few years.

Archdiocese of New York spokesman Joseph Zwilling told the Daily News that this year's enrollment is down to 129 students, which is three times less than the school's enrollment 10 years ago.

But parents, upset at the school's closing, are hoping they can convince church officials to keep the school open.

The Mott Street school has boasted such impressive alumni as Martin Scorcese, who included the school's facade in his film "Mean Streets." The school was also featured in the baptism scene of "The Godfather."

Church officials told the New York Post that they are unsure as to what the final plans will be for the school building, which is on the National Registry of Historic Landmarks.
