TRIBECA — As their children slept peacefully in their strollers, Murray Street residents frustrated by the late-night antics at a local bar unloaded their stack of complaints at a community board meeting one recent evening.

Biddy Early's Pub, at 42 Murray St., is a haven for nocturnal drunkenness, violence and rudeness and it ought to change its ways, many residents said.

"Kegs are delivered at 5 a.m. and they bounce them down the street," said Lauren Caspi, who lives in the same building as the bar and attended the meeting with one of her three daughters.

"They serve until 4 a.m. It’s not just the noise, it’s the bouncers. My husband ran out and stopped one from brutally beating a guy.”

Biddy Early's caters to the younger crowd, with Beer Pong and $8 pitchers served until last call. It's owned by John Carey.

“In John’s defense, he is always respectable with me, pays for windows when they are broken makes any repairs as needed," said the building's property manager, Michelle Moran. "Nonetheless we had near riots in the street and had to lock down the building on numerous occasions.”

Residents offered suggestions for how Carey could keep the peace, including raising the drinking age at his establishment to 25, and increasing his prices. Then, the board voted unanimously to send a letter of complaint to the New York State Liquor Authority, which could result in Biddy Early's losing its liquor license.

Carey is willing to make some changes, said his lawyer, Jon Grundy, but resourcefulness was required to keep his business going.

“I am open to suggestions," said Carey, who had his liquor license renewed last month.

"I don’t want to lose my place. I’ve been trying different ideas all along. I’m going to try and start being more aggressive with the situation.”
