MANHATTAN — Expect thousands of New Yorkers to call in "sick" today as Yankee fever takes over the Financial District for a parade to celebrate the team's 27th World Series championship.

A sea of Navy blue and Pinstripes will fill the Canyon of Heroes when the ticker-tape parade kicks off at 11 a.m. at Broadway and Battery Place. At a ceremony at 1 p.m. at City Hall, Mayor Michael Bloomberg will give the team keys to the city.

The parade itself is free but on Thursday the city gave away 500 tickets to the City Hall ceremony. Those not able to get tickets can watch the ceremony on a giant screen near City Hall Park.

Sure, the Yankees have had other ticker tape parades, but this one may be the biggest yet. Bloomberg promised the largest parade New York "has ever seen," AM New York reported.

World Series MVP Hideki Matsui, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and the rest of the Bronx Bombers will be showered with more than 36 tons of confetti and paper.

The parade is expected to cost upwards of $331,000, about the same as the city's most recent celebration, the New York Giants Super Bowl victory parade in 2008.

Despite the cost, city officials say the parade is a boon to businesses and will generate millions in tax dollars.

Parade-goers should bundle up, the forecast calls for a breezy day with temperatures in the low 40s at the start of the celebration.
