Tayshana Murphy was killed early Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011. Murphy was outside of her home at Grant Houses in Harlem when she was chased inside the building.

Tyshawn Brockington, 21, and Robert Cartagena, 20, allegedly shot Murphy, 18,  three times — in the chest, hip and arm — after chasing her down in the Grant Houses. Surveillance video showed the two men at the scene of the crime with guns in their waistbands, according to Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.

Police say Murphy's shooting may have stemmed from a beef between rival crews at the Grant Houses and the nearby Manhattanville Houses. Cartagena was assaulted a day before Murphy's shooting, according to police. U.S. Marshals say Cartagena and Brockington were captured hiding in a closet in Columbia, S.C. on Sept. 21. Both men were arrested.

A senior at Murry Bergtraum High School for Business Careers, Murphy was among the top point guards in the nation. Her father Taylon Murphy said his daughter was being recruited by several colleges and hoped to play in the WNBA one day.

She was given the nickname "Chicken" because of her bowlegged gait, according to friends and family.

Overflow crowds had to be turned away from both Murphy's wake and funeral in Astoria, Queens on Sept. 17, 2011.
