Cyclist Dies a Week After Being Struck By Tractor-Trailer on UWS, NYPD Says

By Trevor Kapp | October 20, 2017 12:01pm

UPPER WEST SIDE — A bicyclist who was seriously injured after being crushed under the wheels of a tractor-trailer at a busy neighborhood intersection last week has died of his injuries, according to police.

Abu Suffian Molliek Rifat, 24, was riding north on Amsterdam Avenue at West 72nd Street at around 10:15 p.m. on Oct. 10 when he "struck the side of the tractor trailer and fell to the ground," the NYPD said in a release. The driver of the tractor-trailer was traveling in the same direction when the cyclist was hit.

Molliek Rifat, of Jamaica, Queens, was taken to Saint Luke’s Hospital, where he died on Wednesday, according to police.

The truck driver, who was working for Trans Prte Incorporated, remained at the scene and hadn’t been charged as of Friday morning.

A witness told West Side Rag that Molliek Rifat was dragged by the truck for half a block.

An NYPD spokesman could not say whether the investigators' account was based on video evidence, eyewitness accounts or the driver's account, but stressed that the investigation is ongoing.

Molliek Rifat was the 11th bicyclist involved in a crash at the intersection since 2012, according to the city's Vision Zero Map
