QUEENS — A man was fatally struck by a car while trying to cross the Van Wyck Expressway near Jamaica Hospital early Tuesday morning, police said.

The man, whose name has not been released, tried to cross the highway from west to east near 91st Avenue shortly after midnight when a gray 2014 Honda Accord heading south hit him, NYPD officials said.

The pedestrian, who's about 50, was found with severe head and body trauma between the second and third lanes. He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

The 22-year-old driver of the Honda had initially left, but he then returned to the scene shortly after, police said. He was not initially arrested or ticketed, police said.

It was not immediately clear if the victim was struck by other vehicles after being hit by the Honda Accord, police said.

The police investigation is ongoing, officials said.
