Homeless Intruder Dangles Girl Off Fire Escape After Stabbing Mom: NYPD

THE BRONX — Two good Samaritans rescued a 3-year-old girl who was being dangled from a fire escape by a homeless man who pushed his way into her Melrose home and stabbed the tot's mother with broken glass Wednesday night, police said.

Suspect Christian Valdez, 28, who knew the woman through church, showed up at the family's home on Cauldwell Avenue, near East 149th Street, at 7:39 p.m. and forced his way in, police said.

The 37-year-old mom fled with her daughter to the fire escape while being followed by Valdez, who broke a glass bottle on the frightened mom before stabbing her with the jagged shards, according to the NYPD.

Valdez wrestled the tot away from the woman, slicing the little girl's elbow during the struggle, and at one point  threatened to toss her over the fire escape's railing of the six-story building, police said.

A pair of passersby saw the commotion and managed to take the child away from the homeless man after climbing up to where the attack occurred, according to the NYPD.

The mother, who suffered a puncture wound to her torso, and the child were taken to Lincoln Medical Center for treatment and were listed in stable condition.

Valdez was arrested and charged with assault, burglary, endangering a child and harassment, according to police.

He was expected to be arraigned Thursday.
