MANHATTAN — A man fatally stabbed his wife Sunday night during an argument over a trip she was taking to the Dominican Republic then leaped to his death from their eighth floor window, police said.

Francisco Ferreiras, 69, repeatedly stabbed Bernarda Ferreiras, 53, in their eighth-floor home at 2640 Frederick Douglass Boulevard about 9:18 p.m. with her mom in the apartment with them, NYPD officials said.

Francisco Ferreiras walked to his bedroom window and jumped out, police said.

Neighbor Martiza Carmona heard a chilling thump on the pavement, she said.

"I thought somebody had thrown something off the building — something heavy," Carmona said.

"I can't forget because the only thing I hear is that hump," added the neighbor

The wife was pronounced dead at Harlem Hospital, police said.

Her husband was pronounced dead in a parking lot beside their building, police said.

The wife and mother were due to return to the Caribbean island where the mother had a home that the couple recently renovated, neighbors said.

It wasn't immediately clear why the husband had been enraged by the trip.

Neighbors were shocked by the murder suicide.

"This has been a surprise. They were friendly people. He used to ask me to go to his apartment for coffee when he saw me working on his floor," said the building's super Luis Caraballo, who's also lived there for 17 years.

"[The husband] was very happy. He had a grandson. [...] That's why this is such a big surprise," Caraballo said.

Carmona was equally surprised by the deaths.

"I talked to [the wife] many times. They were good people. She was going to the Dominican Republic with her today," the neighbor said.

Bernarda Ferreiras's mother, whose name and age weren't immediately released, had been staying with the couple while her home was being remodeled in the Dominican Republic, neighbors said.
