GREENPOINT — Police caught the chief suspect in the fatal stabbing of a neighborhood playwright that was sparked by an exchange of dirty looks, officials said.

Gary Correa, 20, who police believe killed George Carroll as he strolled home with his wife on Monitor Street on Aug. 18, was spotted on Norman Avenue between Dobbin and Guernsey streets about 1 p.m. Thursday afternoon, according to police.

Police charged Correa was charged with murder Thursday night.

Outside the 94th Precinct Stationhouse Friday morning, Correa, wearing a white tee shirt with an American flag on it, declined to comment on the charges as he was ushered into an unmarked police car.

He was awaiting arraignment Friday and information on his attorney wasn't available immediately.

The NYPD had earlier identified Correa, a Bushwick Houses resident with 13 prior arrests, and two pending gunpoint robbery cases against him both of which took place on the same day in 2016, as the suspect in Carroll's murder.

He was out on $20,000 bond for those weapons and robbery charges, court records show.

Carroll, who was walking with wife Christine at the time of his death, made eye contact with his attacker, exchanged words and then was chased, police said.

Carroll's wife caught up with her husband, lying on the sidewalk with stab wounds. He died later at Woodhull Hospital.

His killer evaded police for nearly two weeks.
