MANHATTAN — Three workers were injured after a fire broke out in an Upper East Side elevator Thursday afternoon, according to fire officials.

The workers were in the lift at 1148 Fifth. Ave. near 96th Street when the fire broke out at about 4:38 p.m., an NYPD spokeswoman said.

Two of the workers were in serious-but-stable condition and the third suffered minor injuries, the spokeswoman added.

All three were taken to New York Hospital-Cornell.

It was not immediately clear what caused the fire.
