THE BRONX — A 13-year-old girl fended off a man who tried to rape her in the stairwell of a Longwood building, police said.

The suspect attacked the girl in the stairwell of the apartment building near Southern Boulevard and Leggett Avenue Monday about 7:45 p.m. after following her inside, police said.

He tried to remove her clothes and shove his hands down her pants, but she resisted and fought the man off, sending him running away, police said.

The suspect, who can be seen in police footage released Wednesday, wasn't immediately arrested, police said.

He's described as in his 20s, standing 5-foot-5 and last seen wearing a black baseball cap, black T-shirt, blue jeans and white sneakers, police said.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS (8477).
